Shikshayatan was a few months old when we realised that our children could not possibly connect or identify with the reading programme we were using by various publications. It called for a total overhaul, a different approach. The programmes had to build language on the one hand, but going together was the need to know the world around, understand and appreciate too.
In higher classes, we needed to simple, fun and totally effective methods to disseminate information while creating an atmosphere of curiosity, association and wonder.
We decided to write for our own children. Our children, who in the early 1990s had not even boarded a bus to go to the nearest town 10 kms away, thought the size of the sea was perhaps larger than the biggest pond in the village; they were excited to see an old Ambassador car trundling away on the main road...Their homes had no electric connections, no light, barely potable water; people came in droves to watch the movies on our television. We felt we had gone back a hundred years in time and that we had to build a bridge to diminish the divide.
So began what was later to become Skylim Associates.
We looked carefully at texts of various Boards at the primary. We broke the topics into simple concepts, created reading programmes for the pre-school.
The books were effective; the children loved them and we had a great curriculum. Our children read with ease and they soaked up the information that went with the books. They enjoyed the activities. For them school was a place to wonder, watch, participate and talk, talk, talk. Assimilation was the watch word and the adults ensured that. Over the years, as we began teacher education programmes for teachers of other schools, the books were made part of the programmes. The kits and other teaching tools were much appreciated and in demand.
During the Covid hiatus, when Shikshayatan was also a part of the lockdown, that we started Skylim Associates. SA specialises in creating books, kits, teaching materials in various subjects and levels, and learning materials based on QuadSeek's teaching methodologies.
The reading programme kits are for ages 2 to 5 with a book and activities. While the book builds the vocabulary and language, the kit defines the context.
There are kits for the primary on various themes. They range from English language usage, science, history, geography and development of the self and personality.
The teaching materials for math, science, geography and history are on the anvil.
You can view our catalogue of books and kits here. Many parts of our reading programme are also available online, for a fee.
